Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is recovering well after undergoing emergency surgery for a brain bleed, his doctors announced.
The 79-year-old president’s condition is “stable,” and he’s conversing normally with medical staff.
The brain bleed was caused by a severe blow to the head Lula sustained when he fell in his bathroom at the presidential residence in Brasilia in October.
He had hit the back of his head, requiring five stitches. At the time, Lula described the incident as “serious” but said it didn’t affect any sensitive area.
Surgery and Recovery
Lula underwent a craniotomy, a procedure where part of the skull is surgically removed to relieve pressure. His medical team drilled into his skull to treat the bleed. Doctors confirmed that the brain was decompressed, and neurological functions were preserved.
“He is stable, conscious and calm,” said Paulo Pimenta, Presidential Spokesperson. Lula will remain in the intensive care unit for another 48 hours under close observation.
While Lula recovers, Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin will assume his agenda, including welcoming Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to Brazil.
The president’s doctors expect him to return to Brasilia next week, resuming his presidential duties.
Lula da Silva has been in power since January 2023, after narrowly beating incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in a bitterly fought election. During his campaign, he often joked about having “the energy of a 30-year-old.”
This health scare has raised concerns about the president’s well-being, but his medical team remains optimistic about his recovery.
