Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo says that fighting corruption must start with accountability among top government officials.

During a Zoom session titled “Boiling Point Arena,” he said, “The best way of fighting corruption is starting from the head.” While he made no reference to President Bola Tinubu, he emphasized that leaders must set an example and show a commitment to transparency and integrity.

Chief Obasanjo is Nigeria’s longest-serving president, having been in office as a military Head of State from 1976-1979 and as civilian president from 1999-2007.

He described corruption as “hydra-headed,” deeply rooted in Nigerian society. He used an analogy, saying, “If you are folding it on one side, it’s falling apart on the other side.”

The ex-president stressed that combating corruption requires continuous effort across all administrations. “Corruption is not a one-day affair. It has to be consistent and continual,” he added.

He also called for merit-based appointments in public office. “Only leaders chosen for their competence and integrity can serve the nation effectively,” he insisted. Obasanjo noted that while God prepares many leaders, some arise from ambition or harmful forces. He warned, “Satan is real and has power.

Obasanjo concluded that sustainable development and national integrity can only be achieved through transparency and accountability in leadership.

All very good advice and thanks to our elder statesman for making that truth public. The question is, who is going to enforce it? The same deeply corrupt leaders?

We are deeply in for a long thing when it concerns greed and corruption at the top.

Corruption is going in a circle in the hands of the Corrupted Leaders. As such, they are unable to fight corruption.
