The Hague Court of Arbitration for Aviation (HCAA) has appointed Chinasa Unaegbunam to its advisory board. She is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) – the elite club of senior lawyers in Nigeria.
The HCAA is a Dutch non-profit organization focused on improving the aviation industry’s dispute resolution. It promotes arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
Tunde Moshood, spokesperson for Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, announced Unaegbunam’s appointment on December 6.
“This is not only a personal achievement but also a significant recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in international aviation arbitration,” he said.
“This accomplishment shows that Unaegbunam is one of Nigeria’s leading aviation legal experts.”
Moshood added, “Unaegbunam continues to break barriers and inspire the next generation of aviation and legal professionals.”
He said her appointment reflects Nigeria’s commitment to excellence and innovation in aviation, which is crucial for economic development.
Mrs Unaegbunam is the second senior advocate of Nigeria with a specialty in Aviation law to serve on the prestigious board.
The current HCAA advisory board has about 40 members, including notable names like Claire McDermott, Mary Walker, and Wade Thomson.
Unaegbunam will advise the HCAA on promoting arbitration and mediation to resolve disputes in global aviation. The organization tries to use these methods as the preferred choice of dispute resolution in the industry.
The advisory board receives support from technical, mediation, and rules-standing committees. These groups provide specialized knowledge to enhance dispute resolution in aviation.
