The book at the centre of a defamatory legal tussle, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System,” written by the Nigerian human rights lawyer and government critic Dele Farotimi, has become an Amazon bestseller just days after his arrest.
He was arrested on Tuesday, December 3.
The book, which criticizes the Nigerian justice system and Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), initially had modest sales after its independent publication on July 2.
However, following Farotimi’s arrest, the book rapidly gained attention, claiming the number one spot in the elections category on Amazon. It even outpaced popular books like “War” by Bob Woodward and “Something Lost, Something Gained” by Hillary Clinton.
Farotimi accused Babalola of bribing the Supreme Court to secure a fraudulent judgment, allegations Babalola vehemently denied through a petition to the Ekiti State Police Command.
Babalola listed 31 defamatory passages from the book, claiming they provoked anger towards him and his law firm.
The book’s surge in sales can be attributed to the public’s intense curiosity, particularly among younger readers.
Roving Heights, a popular Nigerian bookstore, reported that its website crashed due to unusual traffic and demand for the book.
Many have expressed frustration at being unable to obtain the book or its e-copies on social media platforms.
Farotimi remains in detention, with his case adjourned to December 10. Despite this, his book, which detailed instances of underhand compromise of justice in Nigeria, continues to generate interest and controversy about Nigeria’s justice system.
