Ghana Decides: Bawumia, Mahama Face Off in Tight Presidential Election Tomorrow

Ghanaians head to the polls tomorrow to elect a president and 276 parliamentarians.

There are 13 presidential candidates, but the focus is on two: Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Bawumia seeks a historic third consecutive term for the ruling party, while Mahama wants to return to office. He was defeated by incumbent President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of NPP, who served as the 12th president of Ghana in 2017.

Mr. Addo is not qualified to run after completing his constitutionally allowed maximum of two terms.

No leading party has secured a third consecutive term since 1992.

Unemployment, health, and education are key issues influencing the election. The National Commission on Civic Education reports that these issues will inform the election’s outcome.

The incumbent party, NPP, is highlighting its achievements in education, digitalization, and infrastructure development. However, it faces high living costs, corruption allegations, and unfulfilled promises.

On Thursday, thousands of supporters of both parties attended rallies in Accra, making a last-minute push to get their supporters to vote.

Opinion polls project a close contest between the NPP and NDC. Global InfoAnalytics predicts a 51% win for the NDC, while Outcome International forecasts a slim NPP victory.
