The Nigerian Police say it is set to enforce its ban on tinted glasses on vehicles in Abuja.
Olatunji Disu, the police commissioner for the Federal Capital Territory, said that, “Tinted glasses are aiding the rising cases of ‘One Chance’ crimes,” and that they “contribute to a lot of lawlessness” in the city.
This term “One Chance” refers to criminals who disguise themselves as commercial cab drivers. They abduct unsuspecting residents who board their vehicle to use the only vacant seat (one chance) believing other passengers are just regular travelers.
At a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Disu emphasized that the police will “heavily crack down” on those who break the prohibition on tinted glasses to set as examples for others.
For now, the use of tinted glasses on vehicles is prohibited. If your vehicle has tinted glasses, kindly remove them to avoid having your vehicle impounded by the police. During investigations, police found that these tinted windows made it hard for bystanders to see that victims were in distress.
Since starting the command’s special tactical team, police have impounded 296 vehicles for various offenses. These include those using tinted windows, driving with only one license plate, or using concealed or defaced number plates.
It remains to be seen how effectively the police will enforce this ban. Many tinted vehicles and covered number plates automobiles belong to high-ranking political figures and their associates.
