US President-elect Donald Trump had a surprise meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Friday.
The meeting was prompted by Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canada, blaming the country for not stopping illegal immigrants from entering the United States.
Trudeau made an emergency trip to Florida following Trump’s announcement of the tariff on social media. He tried to persuade Trump to reconsider, as a 25% tariff would severely impact the Canadian economy.
During their discussion, Trudeau warned Trump that such a tariff would “completely kill the Canadian economy.” In response, Trump remarked, “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the US to the tune of $100 billion?“
The conversation took an unexpected turn when Trump suggested that Canada might become the 51st state, prompting nervous laughter from Trudeau and others at the meeting.
Trump even joked that Trudeau could serve as a governor instead of a prime minister.
However, Trump was serious about one topic: immigration enforcement. He insisted that Canada must take measures to prevent illegal crossings at the border.
Trump has frequently expressed frustration about illegal immigration into America and plans stricter border control, particularly in the south.
This meeting with Trudeau was Trump’s first face-to-face encounter with a world leader since winning the election.
The outcome of their discussions was kept a secret.
