Yoon Suk Yeol, the President of South Korea, has declared emergency martial law, claiming that the opposition is pro-North and is planning a “rebellion.”
The President announced in a televised speech on Tuesday that the opposition Democratic Party, which has the majority in parliament, was using “anti-state activities” to paralyze his government.
“The martial law is aimed at eradicating pro-North Korean forces and to protect the constitutional order of freedom,” he declared.
The army has been placed on high alert as top military leaders meet to discuss the situation in the Far East nation.
According to local news media, Yonhap, the military has declared that all parliamentary activities will be suspended and that National Assembly members will not be permitted to enter the premises.
However, Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, has called Yoon’s move “unconstitutional.”
Since taking office in 2022, the legislative opposition has regularly thwarted the president’s agenda, which has resulted in a decline in his approval ratings in recent months.

The protracted dispute climaxed last week when the Democratic Party rejected Yoon’s 2025 budget proposal. Instead, it wants a larger budget to “revive people’s livelihoods and the economy.“
The President’s wife and some high-ranking officials have been implicated in several scandals, but the President has resisted all calls for an investigation. This has added to the schism between the government and the parliament and between the Democratic Party and the President’s People Power Party.
