Sir Elton Hercules John, the 77-year-old British singer, songwriter, and pianist, broke the hearts of his fans when he announced he could no longer see after suffering a severe eye infection.
At a gala for “The Devil Wears Prada” musical in London, he explained why he couldn’t see the performance for which he wrote the lyrics.
“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because I have lost my eyesight,” he told the crowd. “I love to hear it, and it sounded good tonight.”
In a recent “Good Morning America” interview, John explained, “I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July,” describing the infection that occurred while he was in France.
“It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest,” he said. He expressed hope for recovery, stating, “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK.”
However, he feels limited in his work, saying, “I can do something like this, but… I can’t see a lyric for a start.”
Elton first mentioned his sight issue in September on Instagram. He wrote, “I have been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye.” He reassured fans, “I am healing, but it’s a prolonged process.”
“I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home,” he added, feeling optimistic about his recovery progress.
The pianist who moved the hearts of millions with his hit song “Candle in the Wind” will be missed. But fans can be consoled by Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, who, though blind, still hit the instruments, even as they pray for Elton’s quick recovery.
