Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju believes Rivers State’s money is central to the rift between Nyesom Wike, current Minister of Abuja, and his political protege, Gov. Sim Fubara.
Adeyanju claims that control over the oil-rich state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has made the dispute between the two men intractable.
Adeyanju made these claims on a recent Glitch Africa Studio podcast, The Honest Bunch. He suggested that the current governor was raising far more internally generated revenue than the erstwhile governor, hence the fight.
“Wike is fighting Fubara because he declared ₦11 billion as IGR about a year ago. The same Fubara declares ₦27 billion, and you say they should not fight?” Adeyanju said.
The activist lawyer also repeated the famous allegation of compromise and corruption against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as a “political party” or a wing of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“If you give INEC water, they will turn it into wine. There is nothing INEC can’t do; what INEC can’t do does not exist. INEC is a political party, and the current INEC is APC,” Adeyanju asserted.
The activist was a former member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) but has since resigned and is focused on advocacy for good governance and the less privileged.
