Three Nigerian soldiers who were part of Operation HADIN KAI, were killed in Kukawa Town, Borno State, during a recent attack on troops by terrorists.

The terrorists, riding motorbikes and gun trucks, tried to enter the camp from the Gudumbali axis using a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED). The Nigerian Army’s Air Component and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Command engaged the terrorists in a gunfight early on Monday, forcing them into a disorganized retreat.

This resolute defense forced the terrorists into a disorganized retreat, leaving behind heavy casualties,” the Army reported in a statement.

During the confrontation, 12 terrorists were killed, and many others fled with gunshot wounds. Troops recovered several arms and weapons, including:

  • • 5 AK-47 rifles
  • • 1 RPG bomb
  • • 1 RPG tube
  • • 2 Anti-Aircraft (AA) guns
  • • 1 QJC gun
  • • 1 NSV heavy machine gun
  • • 40 motorcycles
  • • 152 rounds of Shilka ammunition, among other items.

Additionally, four out of seven VBIEDs deployed by the terrorists were destroyed.

Acting COAS Gen. O. O. Oluyede

Regrettably, three brave soldiers paid the ultimate price during the attack,” the statement added. Efforts to clear and exploit the area are ongoing, with house-to-house searches being conducted to ensure the area is secure.

Acting Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. O. O. Oluyede commended the troops for their courage. He urged them to sustain momentum with ongoing clearance operations and fighting patrols.

We lost three soldiers, but their sacrifice was not in vain,” said Gen. Oluyede. “Our forces responded with determination and forced the terrorists into retreat. We will continue to clear the area and ensure it is secure.
