Vandals Attack Ahoada-Yenagoa Power Transmission Line, Delay Power Supply

Vandals reportedly attacked the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV electric power transmission line on Tuesday while it was still under repair.

In a statement signed by its Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) spokesman, Ndidi Mbah, the company claims the attackers stole approximately one-third of the 250mm conductors from towers 29 to 31. The company indicated that the attack occurred at night.

A team of TCN engineers has been dispatched to the site to assess the extent of the damage and determine how to recommence repairs. Local security has been hired to guard the area at Ula Ikata in Ahoada East LGA to prevent further theft until repairs are completed. The statement also mentioned that “the line will be energized from the Ahoada end as a preventive measure.

TCN is working to replace the stolen 250mm conductor. “Despite challenges, the restringing of the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV line is about 85% complete,” the statement claimed.

This is not the first time vandals have targeted power infrastructure. Earlier this month, transmission towers in Okada and Ofosu along the 330kV Benin-Egbin and Benin-Omotosho lines were also attacked. “A total of 31 towers were affected in this incident,” the statement noted.

During a routine check, TCN linesmen discovered the towers were severely damaged, and critical parts were stolen. TCN has begun repairs and emphasized the need to combat vandalism and theft, which is impacting Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

These incidents underscore the urgent need for increased security measures and public awareness to help safeguard Nigeria’s power infrastructure from further attacks.
