Gov Umo Eno’s Ambitious N1 Trillion 2025 Budget In Akwa Ibom Gets Executive Council’s Nod

The Executive Council of the oil-rich Akwa Ibom State has approved Governor Umo Eno’s ambitious 2025 budget estimate of N955 billion.

The Council took the decision on Wednesday, November 20. The governor will later submit the estimates to the legislative body for appropriation and enactment.

According to the details released by the state Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong, “This proposed budget includes N300 billion recurrent expenditure, which is a 14% decrease from 2024, and a capital expenditure set at N655 billion, representing a 13% increase from the previous year to focus on important development projects.“

The budget targets Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of N80 billion, a 28% increase from last year.

In addition to the 2025 budget, the Council also approved a supplementary budget for 2024.

This supplementary budget reflects savings of N8.92 billion and an increase of N82.41 billion for the 2024 Appropriation Bill. “The supplementary budget incorporates N8,922,513,000 in savings and N82,414,029,890 in augmentations.“

On infrastructure, the Council approved new road projects in all three senatorial zones of the state, covering over 35 kilometers:

• 12.5km road spanning multiple areas in Oruk Anam and Mkpat Enin LGAs.
• 2.7km road from Nto Obio Akpan to Ikot Obong in Essien Udim LGA.
• 2km road from Ikot Uso-Udo Atan to Nto Obodem Mbiaso in Ikot Ekpene LGA.
• 10.9km road with two 40m-span bridges in Ibiono Ibom and Ikono LGAs.
• Re-award of a 21.5km road with a 45m-span bridge in Ikono LGA.
• 2km access road to the School of Health Technology in Etinan LGA.
• 7.7km road in Ikot Ekpene LGA, including various spurs.

The Council also approved new waste management equipment.

Governor Eno said, “It is vital for all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to execute the budget effectively and promptly.” He has urged everyone to “work with precision and urgency” to achieve the state’s economic goals.

In a major policy review, the Council also approved the implementation of a 65-year retirement age for non-academic staff of state-owned tertiary institutions, effective January 1, 2025.
