Leaders from the South-East region of Nigeria have urged President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been in detention since 2021 despite being acquitted of charges by several courts, including the Appeal Court, Nigeria’s second-highest court.
The latest call for his release came from Senator Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo State. He spoke during a tribute night for the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah on Monday, November 18.
Ubah passed away in London on July 27, and he will be buried on November 22.
Okorocha stated, “The Federal Government can honor the memory of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah by granting one of his last wishes—releasing Nnamdi Kanu.“
He directed his message to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who was present at the event. “Our in-law, please message the President on behalf of all Igbos here.” He added, “For the sake of your wife, our daughter, send this message and get us a result.”

The region has seen increased violence, with angry youths protesting Kanu’s imprisonment, turning what was once a peaceful land of commerce and industry into a place of bloodshed and tears.
Multiple attacks have been reported weekly since 2021 by suspected militias sympathetic to the incarcerated leader. They enforce an illegal Sit-At-Home order every Monday, demanding no one enter or leave the region in protest.
During the tribute, Okorocha reiterated, “Nnamdi Kanu needs to be released so that the Igbos can return home and reorganize their lives.”
