Adeboye Under Fire: Human Rights Lawyer Calls for His Retirement

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has called on Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), to retire. Effiong was responding to a widely circulated video where the cleric said that his prayers were responsible for why the exchange rate of Nigeria’s currency did not plummet to N10,000 to $1.

Effiong labeled Adeboye’s assertion “preposterous” since it is common knowledge that exchange rates are determined by economic and monetary policies and a country’s productivity, not prayers.

In a post on his social media handle on Saturday, Effiong wrote, “Pastor Enoch Adeboye should retire and go home. His controversial statements on the nation’s state offend the sensibilities of right-thinking members of society.

Effiong continued, “In life, it is always better to know when to exit the stage. The fact that Adeboye is holding brief for this incompetent and oppressive government is a mockery of Christianity. Many people in our country have stopped going to church due to the sickening hypocrisy and connivance of these religious leaders.

Romance Between Clerics And Politicians

The human rights lawyer claimed that “Tinubu has paid billions in fuel subsidy, contrary to his public statements. Tinubu’s government has not addressed the rot and corruption in the oil sector. We are not all naive and gullible.

He rhetorically stated, “Adeboye has been praying for decades for Nigeria and Nigerian politicians, and things haven’t improved. It is either his prayers are not working, or God is not listening to him.”

Effiong also highlighted the involvement of some of the country’s “most corrupt and evil politicians” as Adeboye’s “disciples and followers.” He asked the pastor to “look at himself in the mirror.

The human rights lawyer’s comments may ruffle the ethnic and religious sensitivities of the constituencies that revere the cleric. However, it must be pointed out that the Bishop and some of his fellow senior Christian leaders, who were often very critical of past administrations, have tended to treat the government of President Bola Tinubu with more understanding.
