Aloy Ejimakor, the special counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), said it appears to him that northern Nigeria has finally agreed with his client’s view that Nigeria has ended as a unifying entity.

On Tuesday, Ejimakor was responding to comments made by Ango Abdullahi, the spokesman for the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), who said that Nigeria’s unity needs to be renegotiated because the country “expired 10 years ago.”

In a statement, Ejimakor stated, “Earlier today (12th November 2024), I noticed that several news outlets quoted the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and Prof. Ango Abdullahi as having proclaimed that Nigeria ‘expired’ 10 years ago or in 2014.” He added that they suggested Nigeria should be “renegotiated” for this reason.

Ejimakor believes this statement marks a shift from the North’s previous stance. Mr. Kanu, who is standing trial for sedition and terrorism and demanding separate nationhood for his South Eastern region, has long proclaimed his view about the expiration of the instrument of amalgamation in 1914.

Mazi Kanu’s position then, just as the North has now conceded, was that the legal instrument upon which Nigeria was founded in 1914 has a fixed duration of one hundred years, which expired in 2014,” Ejimakor quipped.

He wondered why Kanu was still incarcerated now that his previously peripheral view had become mainstream.

He then asked, “Now that the North has said the same thing for which Mazi Kanu was arrested, detained, and charged, is it, not time for the Federal Government and even the North to show some contrition by apologizing to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu or acknowledging that he was right all along?
