Peter Obi Backs Nigerian Youths To Seek Global Opportunities

Former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, says that contrary to conventional views, he supports Nigerian nurses seeking global opportunities abroad.

Obi made this statement over the weekend while donating a total of N60 million to educational institutions in Anambra State, with N50 million allocated to Peter University in Achina/Onneh and N10 million to the School of Nursing Sciences, Adazi-Nnukwu.

Addressing students of the College of Nursing Sciences in Adazi-Nnukwu, Obi discussed the importance of seeking better opportunities if the local environment does not provide adequate support.

I have always told the Nursing Council not to restrict you people from traveling abroad after graduation. If it does not work for you here, go where it will work for you. We will not advise anyone to stay where it is difficult for them. If you want to seek greener pastures outside, please go. I’m sure that when we build a greater Nigeria, you will come back“, he said.

Obi shared a personal anecdote about his former personal assistant, Michael-Jude, who relocated to the UK after marrying a nurse. The UK government granted his wife and her husband all rights to study, and they are now settled in the UK. Obi humorously mentioned that he is currently looking for a new personal assistant.

Value On Education

In addition to his support for nurses, Obi stressed the transformative power of education as a pillar of national development. He urged students to pursue academic excellence, saying that an investment in education is an investment in the future. Obi described education as the “most impactful tool for societal progress” and encouraged students to see themselves as future leaders capable of driving positive change.

Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor, a key proprietor of both Peter University and the nursing college, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Obi for his steadfast commitment to education. He praised the former governor’s pivotal role in transforming education in the state, notably through returning schools to the Church and revitalizing infrastructure and academic standards.

The Vice Chancellor of Peter University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel Umezinwa, thanked Obi for his continued support. He said Obi’s contributions to the university, particularly his sponsorship of the entrepreneurship center, which aims to equip students with practical skills for self-reliance and innovation, were roundly appreciated by all.
