Tech billionaire and self-anointed free speech advocate Elon Musk has taken on a new role of mediating global peace.
Musk, who supported President-elect Donald Trump and heavily funded his campaign, is reportedly involved in initiatives to end the Russian-Ukrainian war that appears to have stalemated.
President-elect Trump spoke on Wednesday with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and during the call, handed the phone to Elon Musk, an increasingly influential figure around Trump who is tipped to play a significant role in the emerging new administration.
Musk had provided communications capability—Starlink—to Ukraine in the wake of its war with Russia.
It is not clear what the three men discussed specifically, let alone if it centered on a possible U.S. policy shift toward Ukraine. Mr. Musk was with Mr. Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s residence in Florida, when Zelensky called to congratulate Trump on his election victory.
An insider who was privy to the phone conversation described it simply as a “good talk. ” He said that after Trump finished with Zelensky, he handed over the phone to Musk. Zelensky used the opportunity to thank Musk for the communication assistance.
Hopes of Ending The War
Trump promised throughout the campaign that he knew what to say to the leaders of the warring nations to end the Ukrainian war “within 24 hours.” He promised to do it even before his inauguration. Some American voters supported Trump because of his record of zero international conflict during Trump’s first term in office from 2017 to 2021.
But the cozy relationship between Donald Trump and Russian strongman Vladimir Putin worries supporters of Ukraine, especially in Europe. His pledge to end the war is mainly interpreted as allowing Russia to hold on to the territory it has seized since invading Ukraine in 2022. During a presidential debate, Mr. Trump declined to say which side he wanted to see win the war, and he often complains that vital resources that should have been used to take care of inner cities in America are sent abroad to assist Ukraine in the war.
The Biden administration would have spent over $200 billion in grants and military aid to Ukraine since the Russian invasion.
Mr. Musk, whose SpaceX is increasingly relied upon by the Pentagon for some of its operations, has gotten very close to Trump since Trump launched his presidential comeback bid. He had suggested he might bring Musk into some role in his administration to cut government spending and increase government responsiveness and efficiency.
With all his futuristic technology, unprecedented wealth, a now wannabe global peacemaker, and close-knit relationship with the would-be most powerful man on earth, the duo of Trump and Musk leaves us scratching our chins about what the future might be for the world with these two extraordinary men.
