As Americans head to the polling booths today for the U.S. presidential election, it’s eerily reminiscent of Germany’s federal election on November 6, 1932.
On that fateful day, Germans innocently cast their ballots, unaware that the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nazi) would soon seize power. The Nazis gained significant ground in parliament, becoming the largest party in the Reichstag for the first time, although not enough seats to form a majority.
By January 1933, the Nazis had taken control of the German government, and that was the last free and fair elections until the fall of the Third Reich.
Fast-forward to today, November 5, on the other side of the sea. Another German, albeit a German-American, Donald Trump, is on the ballot. Some are worried about what they see as potential dangers of Trump’s second presidency, given the events of his first term, his legal ordeals, and his recent campaign rhetoric. President Joe Biden and candidate Kamala Harris have labeled Trump a “fascist,” warning he is a “threat to American democracy.”
Former President Barack Obama has joined Harris on the campaign trail, echoing the same concerns. “We do not need four more years of bluster, bumbling, and chaos,” Obama said. “We have seen that movie before, and we all know that the sequel is usually worse,” he warned at a recent rally.
Talk show host Oprah Winfrey issued a desperate last warning in the remaining hours of the campaign: “We don’t get to sit this one out. If we don’t show up tomorrow, it’s entirely possible that we will never have the opportunity to cast a ballot again.“
Some, particularly Trump supporters, may dismiss these speeches as mere political scare tactics. Many of them are drawn to his anti-immigration policies, his pledge to build a US-Mexico border wall, and his “zero-tolerance” policy. Trump’s promises on tax cuts and deregulation excite the middle class, and his anti-abortion, even if contrived conservative values, resonate strongly with the evangelical Christian Right. His focus on trade-oriented foreign policy and law and order has also revitalized his base.
The nation holds its breath as the polls begin to close and ballots are counted. The outcome may take hours, perhaps days, especially in swing battleground States such as Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Arizona, Michigan, and Nevada.
The dating parallels between 1932 Germany and today’s America are noteworthy. Given Donald Trump’s increasingly incendiary rhetoric, we at JolibaLive News! blog believes they should not be dismissed. This is an 81-year-old former US president, after all.
Donald Trump’s description of some top Democrats as “the enemy from within” and talk of deploying the military against political foes if he wins the election is unusual language in America’s political lexicon. They should be worrying signs about the rule of law if Trump is re-elected.

He once suggested the military could be used to quell violence at the polls from “radical left lunatics.”
“People who take their oath to the constitution seriously have trouble wrapping their heads around someone who views the constitution and the rule of law as nuisances to be circumvented rather than a set of principles to be scrupulously honored,” warned Michael Bromwich, a former inspector general at the justice department.

It’s never safe to dismiss the views or words of world leaders. Recall that the German Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, did not mince words about his agenda.
