A helicopter crash occurred in Port Harcourt on Thursday, October 24, resulting in the loss of multiple lives. The helicopter, operated by East Wind Aviation, was carrying six oil workers and two crew members when it nosedived into the Atlantic Ocean near the Mimbo platform and Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel around 11:40 a.m.
When the incident occurred, the oil workers were conducting operations at the OML 123 oil field, sending shockwaves throughout the industry. “There were six personnel and two crew members onboard the helicopter. Three bodies have been recovered so far. Search and rescue is ongoing,” a source revealed.
The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development confirmed that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau was notified and emergency response teams were immediately activated.
The Honourable Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, SAN, assured that search and rescue operations are ongoing and involve multiple agencies, including the Nigerian Search and Rescue Unit, NCAA, NSIB, and others.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Despite the absence of an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal, manual efforts are being made to plot the crash location. “All available resources, including the military and low-flying aircraft, have been deployed to assist in locating and rescuing any survivor(s),” Minister Keyamo explained. Neighboring aerodromes have been alerted to provide further support in the ongoing rescue mission.
Condolences and Support
Minister Keyamo expressed condolences to the families of those on board. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those on board, and we are committed to providing the necessary support during this difficult time.”
The NNPCL also offered support, stating, “We shall continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates as the events unfold. Our prayers are with the passengers, crew and their respective families at this very difficult time“.
Investigation Commence
The cause of the crash is still unknown, and investigations are underway. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau will lead the investigation, with support from relevant agencies.
