In a move towards improving the welfare of its workers, the Enugu State government has announced an increase in its minimum wage to N80,000, surpassing the national minimum of N70,000.

Governor Peter Mbah announced the change in a statement shared on X. The new wage structure will be effective from October 2024. This adjustment advantageously positions Enugu State workers, who will receive higher wages than their counterparts in many other states.

I have just approved a minimum wage of N80,000 for Enugu workers, effective October 2024,” Governor Mbah stated. He further expressed his appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices of the state’s workforce and committed to continuing prioritizing their welfare, in alignment with the promises made during his campaign.

Under Governor Mbah’s leadership, which has been widely acclaimed for its transformative impact, ambitious plans are underway to elevate the state’s economy from a $4 billion GDP to a staggering $30 billion. This represents an increase of more than 2000% over his tenure, showcasing a bold vision for economic growth and development.

However, the administration has faced criticism for imposing high taxes on its citizens, a concern that has been voiced by various stakeholders.

It is worth noting that Enugu is not the only state in Nigeria to set its minimum wage above the national level. Akwa-Ibom, another state benefiting from oil wealth, has also announced a similar increase, while Rivers State has gone a step further by matching Lagos State’s minimum wage of N85,000.

In contrast, Abia State adheres to the national minimum wage of N70,000.

This development in Enugu State is expected to set a precedent for other states, reflecting a growing trend of states independent action to improve the living standards of their workers.
