President Bola Tinubu appointed seven new ministers and removed five in an ongoing major cabinet reshuffle, the first since he took office in 2023.
One of the appointments is the former Nigerian ambassador to Spain, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu. She is the widow of the late Gen. Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Head of State of the short-lived Biafran Republic between 1967 and 1970. He died in 2014.
Mrs. Ojukwu, born on August 5, 1968, is the daughter of a maverick First Republic politician, Chief Christian Onoh. She is a lawyer and a former beauty queen, winning The Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) in 1988, Miss Africa in 1988, and Miss Intercontinental in 1989.
Ojukwu will serve as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs if cleared by the Nigerian parliament.
The appointments follow a meeting of the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday, during which the long-awaited cabinet reshuffle was finally announced.
Mrs Jumoke Oduwole was also named Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, replacing Mrs. Doris Uzoka-Anite from Imo State.
Others appointees include:
- Dr Nentawe Yilwatda (Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction)
- Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi (Minister of Labour & Employment)
- Idi Mukhtar Maiha (Ministry of Livestock Development)
- Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata (Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development), and ,
- Suwaiba Said Ahmad PhD (Minister of State Education).
All appointees must await legislative approval before taking office.
