Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has dissolved two ministries: the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Ministry of Sports Development, in an apparent rationalization and reshuffling of cabinet.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, made the announcement. The President has created a new ministry, the Ministry of Regional Development, to incorporate all regional development commissions. This includes the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Sports Development will transfer the responsibilities it previously held to the National Sports Commission.

In addition, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) – the highest decision-making body of government chaired by the president, has sanctioned the amalgamation of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy. The reorganization is intended to lean the government accused of being the largest government in Nigeria’s history with 48 ministries.

Furthermore, the President sacked five ministers. Those affected include,

  • Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye;
  • Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John;
  • Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman;
  • Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Gwarzo, and
  • Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Ibrahim.

The President gave no reason for the dismissals. A presidential statement conveying the information simply said, “The President thanked the outgoing members of the Federal Executive Council for their service to the nation while wishing them the best in their future endeavors. “

The statement further stated that the President wants new appointees to see their appointment as “a call to serve the nation.”

The Presidential statement also announced the re-assignment of 10 ministers to new portfolios and the nomination of seven new ministers for onward transmission to the senate for screening and confirmation.
