A fairly powerful magnitude-5.9 earthquake struck eastern Turkey’s Malatya province on October 16, 2024, damaging several buildings. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
The quake was felt as far as Syria, triggering fears of a repeat of last year’s devastating earthquakes that claimed over 50,000 lives.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the district of Kale, approximately 40 km east of Malatya city in eastern Turkey. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported the quake had a 6.1 magnitude and was 9 km deep.
Three buildings partially collapsed, and nearly 190 people were treated in hospitals across six provinces for quake-related injuries. According to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, 43 other victims are still under careful medical observation due to injuries sustained.
Turkey’s disaster and emergency management authority (AFAD), police, and gendarmerie security teams conducted inspections across the region, including Diyarbakir, Sanliurfa, Elazig, Batman, and Tunceli provinces.
This earthquake follows a magnitude 6.0 quake that hit the same region the day before, affecting Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, and Syria. The tremors remind us of the region’s seismic vulnerability.
Turkey has experienced several earthquakes in recent days, with two occurring in the past 24 hours and eight in the past seven days.
