A horrific petrol tanker explosion occurred in Majia town, Taura local government area of Jigawa State, resulting in the loss of a mind-blowing 94 lives and injuring 50 others.
According to DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, Police Public Relations Officer, the tragic incident happened on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, around 11 pm, when the tanker’s driver lost control and crashed.
“As people gathered around the accident scene to scoop up the spilled fuel, unaware of the impending danger, the tanker exploded within minutes, engulfing the area in flames,” Adam said.
Jigawa State’s Commissioner of Police, A.T Abdullahi, extended condolences to the people of Majia town and Jigawa State, urging citizens to exercise caution and avoid scenes of petrol tanker accidents.
Fuel tanker accidents are tragically common in Nigeria, with hundreds of trucks crisscrossing the country to deliver this highly combustible fossil fuels. This accident is another urgent reminder of the need for Nigeria to invest in railway development, a primary transportation method for goods in most industrialized nations.
Transitioning to rail would reduce the risks associated with road transportation, ensure a more efficient movement of goods, and most of all, save lives.
