A part of Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed again on Monday evening, plunging the southeastern and north-central regions, including the federal capital city of Abuja, into darkness.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the grid collapse in a statement, characterizing it as a “general system” failure that occurred at 18:48 hours on Monday.
The company stated that all its interface Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stations are out of supply, so it is unable to provide services to customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.
“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo,” said Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC.
Similarly, Abuja Disco announced that the power outage was due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 p.m., affecting the power supply to their franchise areas. “Rest assured, we are working with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your understanding,” they stated.
The cause of the collapse is not immediately known, but this is the fifth grid collapse in 2024 alone. The country’s aged and over-centralized infrastructure and inefficient management often lead to grid collapse and blackouts in sections or entire regions.
