Two days before the Local Government Council elections in Rivers State, voters remain uncertain about their eligibility to vote. This follows the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) announcement that it has not yet released the 2023 Voter Register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
The local government elections are scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024.
Protests erupted on Thursday morning at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt in connection with the upcoming elections. Security officers were present as large crowds of protesters gathered at the location.
At the time of this report, the protests had caused traffic delays, with security officers struggling to control the crowd.
It remains unclear if the elections will proceed as scheduled, and if they do, whether the process will be credible.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Johnson Alalibo, speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, confirmed that while RSIEC had applied for the Voter Register, but it has not been released due to administrative reasons.
Alalibo also noted that the Commission had received a court judgment from Abuja barring the release of the register, adding another layer of uncertainty to the situation.
