Governor Alia Declares Work-Free Day Ahead of Benue Local Government Elections On Saturday

Residents of Benue State head to the polls on Saturday, October 5, to elect new Local Government Executives including 276 councillorship and 23 chairmanship positions,

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has declared Friday, October 4, 2024, as a work-free day to allow citizens to travel and prepare for the local government elections. The Governor emphasized the importance of active participation in the elections and asked public and private organizations to support this initiative.

Governor Alia also urged all parties and peace to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the process. Three political parties—All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party—signed a peace accord in preparation for the election. However, representatives from the African Action Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, New Nigeria Peoples Party, and Zenith Labour Party were absent from the peace summit.

During a peace parley, Commissioner of Police Hassan Yabanet assured citizens of the security agencies’ readiness to ensure a peaceful process. The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) Chairman, Telumun Tombowua, also pledged to be impartial and deliver a free, fair, and credible election. He confirmed that all necessary materials had been secured and were being dispatched to the LGAs.

Both APC and PDP have fielded candidates for all positions, while other parties have fewer candidates. The PDP- the main opposition party which lost the state to APC in 2023, urged BSIEC to uphold its commitment to transparency, warning against any election compromise.

Security agencies have pledged full cooperation to ensure the elections are conducted safely and fairly.
