Barcelona FC and Spanish🇪🇸 football legend, Andrés Iniesta, has decided to retire from professional football at the age of 40. He was born in May 1984 in Fuentealbilla, Spain.
The veteran midfielder, who spotted #8 for his country and club will officially announce his retirement on October 8. He has been a free agent for several months after leaving Emirates FC.
Iniesta is widely regarded as one of Spain’s most beloved footballers. He famously scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final, securing Spain’s first-ever World Cup title with a strike four minutes from the end of extra time. His contributions were also pivotal in Spain’s victories at Euro 2008 and 2012.
Inspiring Career at Barcelona
Iniesta’s career at Barcelona is nothing short of legendary. Joining the club as a child from Albacete, he progressed through the La Masia academy and became a first-team regular in his mid-twenties.
Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, Iniesta became an era-defining player. Over more than 20 years with Barcelona, he made 674 appearances, scored 57 goals, and provided 135 assists. His tenure at the club saw him help secure 35 trophies, including nine La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions League titles, and six Copa del Rey titles.
On the international stage, Iniesta earned 131 caps for Spain. He is best remembered for his decisive goal in the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands. In addition to the World Cup, Iniesta was instrumental in Spain’s European Championship victories in 2008 and 2012, and he was named the UEFA Euro Player of the Tournament in 2012.

After leaving Barcelona, Iniesta continued his career in Japan with Vissel Kobe, where he played 134 matches, scored 26 goals, and provided 25 assists. He later had a brief stint with UAE-based club Emirates, featuring in 23 matches.
