The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered a probe into allegations of bribery within the Nigerian Correctional Service after a voice note by one activist, Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, went viral.
In the voice note, the crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly called Bobrisky, claimed that after his conviction in April for currency mutilation, his godfather (unnamed) arranged for him to serve his six-month sentence in a private apartment rather than prison.
Bobrisky further claimed to have been contacted by a rap musician, Falz, and his human rights lawyer father, Chief Femi Falana (SAN), who proposed to help him seek the government’s pardon for an N10 million fee.
Chief Falana (SAN) is one of Nigeria’s foremost constitutional lawyers and an anti-corruption and human rights advocate.
In response, Falana denied any involvement with Bobrisky. Falana’s lawyer stated on his behalf, “Our client has never, in his life, spoken to Bobrisky.” He gave VeryDarkMan 24 hours to retract the statement or face legal action.
Tunji-Ojo has directed a full investigation. “The ministry will not tolerate any form of indiscipline or corruption,” said the minister’s spokesperson.
The investigation will be led by Permanent Secretary Dr. Magdalene Ajani, with assurances that the process will be “rigorous and impartial.”
Bobrisky had also claimed to have paid bribes to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to the tune of N15 million to mitigate the charges against him during the April trial, further fueling the controversy surrounding his case.
