New Enugu City, a flagship project of the Governor Peter Mbah Administration, is reportedly gaining traction with the Nigerian diaspora community in the Guangdong Province of China.
The project is part of the vision to reposition Enugu State as a “premier destination for business, investment, tourism, and living“, according to the governor’s manifesto. Mr Mbah in China meeting Nigeria’s diaspora community there to market the project said the critical services in the first phase of the city would be ready in 12 to 18 months, with intensive work by the China Communications and Construction Company (CCCC) already underway since October 2023.

During a roadshow organized recently in Guangzhou City, Enugu indigenes residents there participated and welcomed the governor with fanfare and cultural music.
The Consul-General of the Nigerian Mission in Guangzhou, Ambassador George Onwuekwe, President of the Nigerian community in Guangzhou, Adebutu Olanrewaju, and the President of the Enugu State Association, Guangzhou, Hyacinth Ezeka, attended and commended the governor for his bold vision and investment drive.

Ezeka said: “We are delighted with such development in Enugu State. If the governor continues this way, Enugu State will be the best in South-East and Nigeria. What he is pushing for is the dream we have had for Enugu for a very long time now.
“He has big dreams and he will achieve them with our support. I am advising every Igbo person to invest in Enugu. Coming to Enugu to invest is like ‘Aku ruo ulo’.”

Gov. Mbah, making the investment pitch for the new city, described it as “unique”, claiming it is “the single largest development that is currently going on in the country in terms of real estate.”
The governor also explained that the new city features a “Happy Island that essentially offers a wide array of services such as residential areas, a cutting-edge medical center, and a sports arena.”

He further narrated that the new city contains an “innovation industrial park and Vitality Bay, which is essentially going to house the corporate headquarters of blue-chip companies and some government offices.”
“All the utilities that you need to live there, such as power, water, gas, high-speed internet” will be provided, he said.
The governor envisions transforming the state from a $4 billion GDP to $30 billion during his tenure in office.

Mbah’s developmental strides notwithstanding, his policies are not without critics. Opposition voices raise concerns about the “egregious taxation” of citizens since his administration began in May 2023, at least according to Chijioke Edeoga, Labour Party governorship candidate in 2023.
