Peter Obi Condemns Edo Gubernatorial Election, Calls It ‘State Capture’

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned last weekend’s gubernatorial election in Edo State as another “blatant example of state capture.

In an X post on Monday, Mr. Obi whose party finished a distant third position, criticized the process as a “charade” and warned that Nigeria’s flawed leadership recruitment system is undermining its future.

He said he was disappointed that the country’s investment in technologies such as IReV and BVAS, were going to waste because of wilful sabotage of the systems.

He reminded those “being used to undermine our democracy simply because they hold positions of authority”, to remember that their “time in office is not eternal”.

The society you are helping to destroy today will eventually take her revenge on you tomorrow,” he said.

He called for a political system that is focused on saving the country, rather than capturing power.

Obi’s Labour Party similarly came third in the 2023 general election in which he ran as the presidential candidate. He is still considered a presidential hopeful by his teeming supporters, but if the complaints of a rigged electoral system persist, where then is the prospect for credible leaders to emerge in the next general election of 2027?
