The government of President Joseph Boakai of Liberia is seeking the support of former Liberian President George Weah for Liberia’s petition for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the years 2026 and 2027.

On September 27, Liberia will formally announce its bid in New York. Weah was invited by Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti to participate in the event and asked to record a one-minute video statement supporting the country’s bid earlier this month.

But in response, Weah gave a condition. The office of the former president said Thursday, that although Weah has always backed Liberia’s bid for a seat on the UN Security Council, the nation’s internal policies needed to align with the ideals it wishes to advance internationally such as good governance, promotion of political freedoms, and the rule of law.

George Weah oversaw a peaceful transition from him to President Boakai after losing the election.

The office did not make it clear if the former president will oblige the government.

Mr Weah’s international status has been towering ever since he voluntarily conceded defeat in the general election of January 2024 which brought Mr. Boakai to power.

Before then, he was an international superstar striker for Inter Milan FC, the first African former professional footballer to become a head of state, and the only African Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year winner in history, winning both awards in 1995. He won the African Footballer of the Year three times and is widely considered one of the greatest strikers of all time.
