Vice President Kamala Harris tapped into the star power of America’s talk show icon, Oprah Winfrey, and several Hollywood celebrities in the hopes of winning over voters during an online rally on Thursday night.
The event, titled “Unite for America,” featured questions on a long range of policy issues, and some accounts of personal loss and trauma from select participants to drive home the Harris agenda.
Winfrey praised Harris’s transformation as she became the Democratic Party‘s standard-bearer, to which Harris said she had no option but to “step up and take responsibility” after Joe Biden suddenly dropped out of the race.
The event aimed to mobilize grassroots support on Harris’ behalf in hopes of edging past former President Donald Trump in a “margin-of-error race,” this November.
At least there were 400 persons seated in the hall in Oakland, Michigan, with others joining via online streaming.
Harris Policies Examined
Discussion centered on reproductive rights (a politically correct way of referring to abortion). Hadley Duvall, an abortion rights advocate who was raped and impregnated by her stepfather, was in the audience and so was Shanette Thurman, whose daughter, Amber Nicole died in 2022 in Georgia from a treatable infection due to delays to her medical care stemming from the state’s restrictive abortion law.
Harris also addressed the issue of gun ownership, saying it is a “false choice” to suggest someone is either in favor of the Second Amendment or wants to take everyone’s guns away.
“If somebody breaks in my house, they’re getting shot,” Harris said. “I probably should not have said that,” she added, laughing, “but my staff will deal with that later.”
She also discussed policy issues, such as inflation and dealing with illegal immigration, and oddly blamed Donald Trump and the Republicans for the failures of the Biden administration to halt the tide of illegal immigration into the United States from the southern border.
Some Analysts Unimpressed
But many viewers, even analysts sympathetic to her candidacy keep protesting that several of her answers to policy issues “lacked specifics“.
“When you listen to Kamala Harris on what she will do, you can almost start a drinking game every time she says ‘small businesses,’ Dana Bash said during a panel discussion, regarding Harri’s answers on economy.
Meanwhile, Abby Phillip, her colleague said on Tuesday that Harris does not have quick and “understandable” answers regarding the economy and other topics.
“Black journalists today at the NABJ [National Black Journalists Association] pressed Vice President Kamala Harris on policies from guns to the war in Gaza, but many of her answers lacked specifics,” Phillip said.
The U.S. election is taking place in November and both Trump and Harris are running neck-to-neck in the opinion polls, especially in the swing states that most often determine the US presidential election winner.
