Nigeria’s women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, are now without a head coach after American Randy Waldrum resigned from his position. Waldrum, who led the team at the recent Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games, cited health issues concerning his wife as the reason for his decision to step down.
In a letter dated September 12, Waldrum explained his resignation was necessary due to his wife’s health challenges, stating, “It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that. After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons. This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad.”
This resignation comes just over a month after Waldrum had expressed his love for the team, despite Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where the Super Falcons were eliminated after losing all three group-stage matches. Waldrum, who helped Nigeria end their 16-year Olympic hiatus by defeating South Africa in the final round of qualifiers, had hoped to continue working with the squad.
Waldrum will be remembered for guiding the Super Falcons to the round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. During that tournament, the team navigated a challenging group that included Canada and hosts Australia, who they famously beat 3-2. They also held European champions England to a goalless draw after 120 minutes before being eliminated on penalties.
While his resignation brings an end to his tenure with the Super Falcons, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to officially respond to his letter or announce a replacement.
