The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards will be held this evening Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, beginning at 8:00 pm Eastern time or about 1.00 am Nigerian time, Wednesday, September 12.
The ceremony, hosted by Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion, will recognize the best music videos, artists, and songs released between June 22, 2023 and June 20, 2024. She just recently released her latest album “Megan,” which includes “Mamushi” and “Hiss.”
Two new categories, VMAs Most Iconic Performance and Best Trending Video, will be awarded through fan votes. Taylor Swift was the most nominated artist, with twelve nominations. Katy Perry will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
The biggest names in music will compete for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year awards. Grande, Eminem, Swift, and SZA will be in contention with Bad Bunny and Sabrina Carpenter. Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozey, Swims, and Tyla will compete for the Best New Artist.
More than a dozen celebrities have been tapped to present awards, including Big Sean, Busta Rhymes, DJ Khaled, Halle Bailey, Lil Nas X, Paris Hilton, and Flavor Flav. Other presenters include TikTok star Addison Rae, model Alessandra Ambrosio, and MTV legend Carson Daly.
The VMAs have chosen a slew of artists to perform, including Carpenter, Roan, Camila Cabello, Halsey, Lenny Kravitz, and Swims. Eminem will open the show for the first time since 2010, opening with “Love the Way You Lie” with Rihanna. Katy Perry will receive the Video Vanguard Award, honoring artists for their lifetime achievements.
Eminem’s opening performance might have some drama, as his hit song “Houdini” includes a line directed at Megan Thee Stallion, who was shot in the feet by rapper Tory Lanez in 2020. Swift, a 23-time VMA winner, could have a record-breaking night with 10 traditional nominations and two more nods in fan-voted categories.
There is speculation that Swift will announce or release the re-recorded version of her “Reputation” album due to the 15th anniversary of Ye, formerly Kanye West, interrupting her onstage.
