The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) have started a seven-day warning strike in Nigeria to demand the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a member of NARD who has been held captive for over eight months.

According to a statement by NARD President Dr. Dele Abdullahi, the strike will commence at midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024. The decision was reached during the body’s virtual emergency National Executive Council meeting on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

He clarified that even emergency services will not be provided during the warning strike, saying the down tooling will be total. After the warning strike, additional steps will be taken by the body.

Along with her husband and nephew, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola – a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna was kidnapped in December 2023. Dr Popoola’s husband was freed in March although she and her nephew remain with the bandits.

NARD members recently held protest rally in all of the nation’s tertiary hospitals, demanding more action to get Dr. Popoola out.
