The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed Gov. Hope Uzodinma’s re-election as governor of Imo State in the November 2023 election. He is of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party.
Justice Mohammed Idris, leading a five-member panel of the apex court, dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Samuel Anyanwu, for lack of merit.
Justice Idris resolved all issues raised in the appeal against the appellants and dismissed the appeal by the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Athan Achonu, for being unmeritorious.
The judge authored and read the lead judgment, resolving three issues against the appellants, finding that they failed to prove their case as required.
The Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the Imo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which dismissed the appellants’ petition.
The appellants approached the Court of Appeal, claiming the election was invalid due to non-compliance with the Electoral Act and challenging Uzodimma’s qualification with an allegation of forged West African Examination Certificate (WAEC) results.
The court of appeal held that the appellants failed to prove these allegations and that the governor submitted a forged certificate.
