Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a key opposition politician in Nigeria, has called on President Bola Tinubu’s officials to provide more insight into the president’s sudden trip to France.
In a statement by his media office, Atiku demanded, “Could you kindly elucidate the duration of President Bola Tinubu’s visit to France, or is this engagement open-ended?
“Furthermore, might you provide insight into the nature of the ‘brief work’ being undertaken in France, or is this matter held in secrecy?”
The former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party said it was necessary and patriotic to raise the questions in light of the fact that the president serves as a public steward funded by the nation’s resources.
He said it was the democratic right for Nigerians to be transparently apprised of the president’s schedule and well-being.
Atiku drew a rather disturbing parallel with a scenario when Nigeria’s former President, Umaru Yar’Adua, took ill and later died in 2010 while the country was in the dark about his health status or whereabout.
“I trust that having learned from the Yar’Adua experience, we are committed to upholding a higher standard of transparency,” Atiku said.
On Monday, August 19, Tinubu embarked on a trip to France, departing from Abuja, the nation’s capital. The presidency did not state the purpose of his visit or for how long he would stay.
This is the fourth trip the president has made to the European country since he assumed office last year.
However, the president had only recently returned from an official three-day visit to Equatorial Guinea, appearing hail and hearty.
