The Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, has confirmed the state’s first Mpox case.
During a press briefing after the state Executive Council meeting at the government house in \in Umuahia, Mr. Kanu said the confirmed case occurred at Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area.
He said out of the 13 suspected cases, only one tested positive, nine tested negative, and two were awaiting classification. That would add to the country’s 39 confirmed cases by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
However, Kanu said that there had been no casualties yet. He advised residents to maintain personal hygiene and social distancing. He said that the state government had already set up a treatment center at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, ABSUTH, Aba.
Adding her voice, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Agozi Azodo, said
“Regular personal hygiene is the best way to protect oneself” from contracting the viral disease.
She also advised residents, especially farmers, to minimize contact with animals.
The former Director of the Federal Ministry of Health said the State Government was ready to deal with a possible outbreak of the disease and asked residents to promptly report any suspected cases.
The SA disclosed that the State Government had concluded arrangements to renovate and retrofit 200 primary health centers across the state in 100 days. According to her, the project will commence in the first week of September and be delivered before December.
