The Nigerian megachurch, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), has awarded prizes to 492 members of the church who obtained first class degrees in their institutions of higher learning.

The award was part of the church’s 35th-anniversary celebration.

The anniversary convention themed, “Power from on High,” began on August 16 and concluded on Sunday, August 18, with a Thanksgiving Service and a Holy Communion.

At his Sunday sermon, the church’s General Overseer, Dr. Daniel Olukoya, disclosed how, in 2011, he was divinely led to institute the initiative of gifting student members with an award if they graduate from the university with a first-class. He said he wanted to inspire and empower them to strive for academic excellence.

The cleric said he believes that his ministry has now produced the largest number of first-class graduates in Nigeria, although he provided no evidence to backup the claim.

In 2011, the Lord led us to establish a program within MFM to motivate our youth to excel academically,” Olukoya shared. “I promised that any member with a first-class degree would receive a car. Nineteen students earned first-class honors that first year, and I fulfilled my promise by giving them cars. However, as more students began to achieve this milestone, we had to adapt. By the third year, 77 students made it to the first class, and we started giving monetary awards instead. The number has continued to grow, reaching 492 graduates this year.

Over the years, the MFM’s academic excellence program has grown in popularity and impact. By 2019, during the fifth edition, the church awarded 329 first-class graduates with N250,000 each. This year, the sixth edition saw the number of recipients swell to 492, reflecting the initiative’s success.

The anniversary celebration attracted several dignitaries, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Delta State Governor Sherrif Oborevwori, who were present to witness the event and support the graduates.

The MFM’s initiative has become a beacon of academic encouragement, motivating young church members to strive for excellence while reinforcing the church’s commitment to spiritual discipline and discipleship.
