Four Nigerian soldiers were killed and two others injured in a deadly ambush by bandits in the Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State over the weekend. The attack occurred along the Kukurau-Bangi road, where the assailants also set fire to two patrol vehicles belonging to the military.
Yahya Gudu, the representative for Gudu at the Sokoto State House of Assembly, confirmed the tragic incident to journalists. “Yes, it is true. Some gunmen ambushed soldiers on patrol along the Kukurau-Bangi road on Saturday, killing four of them and injuring two others. They also burned down their patrol vehicles,” Gudu said.
Gudu described the attack as deeply disturbing and said he had informed Governor Ahmed Aliyu about the situation, which led to the deployment of reinforcements to the area.
A resident, who requested anonymity, reported seeing the bandits passing through the area on 20 motorcycles. “Each motorcycle was carrying two well-armed bandits. They didn’t harm or kidnap anyone in our community; they just passed through, and then we heard gunshots,” the resident said.
He continued, “Later, we discovered they had ambushed the soldiers patrolling the area and killed four of them. Their bodies were later recovered by their colleagues.“
The resident also revealed that about a week prior, the bandits, while chasing vigilantes, had killed seven people in the community. “They are still in that bush. There’s a stream where they meet and discuss every day. We have informed the security operatives about their presence, but there has been little response. Perhaps it’s because the bandits are using more sophisticated weapons,” he added.
The incident highlights once again the relentless dire security problem in the northwest region, with residents and officials calling for a more effective comprehensive strategy to address the growing threat of banditry in northern Nigeria.
