In response to recent disturbances in several cities in the United Kingdom, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, has assured the safety and security of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK. The envoy gave the reassurance during a meeting with the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja.

Dr. Montgomery reported that 12 towns have been affected by the disorder. He assured the Nigerian community that the UK government is actively working to restore calm and normalcy. Special measures have been implemented, including establishing 60 special courts staffed by UK police and legal operatives to address the criminal activities. Over 400 individuals have been arrested in connection with the unrest.

The UK is home to people from various countries and races and will remain a welcoming place for qualified individuals to live, study, and work,” Dr. Montgomery stated. He emphasized that the UK will not tolerate discrimination or attacks against any community and is committed to seeking justice against those who incite violence and spread disinformation online.

The High Commissioner reassured that the UK government’s efforts would soon stabilize the affected communities, ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, including the Nigerian diaspora.

We will not, as a country, accept discrimination or attacks against any community,” he declared, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to upholding an open and inclusive society.

This assurance may come as a relief to Nigerians in the UK and relations back home concerned about the recent racially-tainted and anti-immigrant disturbances in that country.
