In a rising pro-Russia sentiment sweeping across Africa, Nigerian #EndBadGovernance protesters in the northern state of Kano were spotted waving Russian flags during protests.
It is uncertain what their message is but former Special Assistant to Former President Muhammadu Buhari on Digital Communication, who is from the state has cautioned to government to “closely monitor the situation and take necessary precautions“.
The ex-presidential aide said the flying of Russian flag at a time of national crisis when patriotic protesters would have been flying the Nigerian flag, “may indicate various underlying sentiments or influences that need to be carefully assessed and addressed by the government“.
Recently, the governments in the neighboring Niger Republic closed Western military bases in the country, and along with Mali and Burkina Faso have pivoted East for economic and military cooperation.
Some Africans continue to view the West with suspicion for their role in the four decades of transatlantic slavery and the colonialism and neocolonialism that followed it – a scourge in which other great powers like Russia or China had no historical involvement.
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu addressed the protesters on Sunday August 4 and called for calm, outlining the achievements of his government. Still, protesters say life has become unbearable with his economic policies and vowed to continue protesting until there is a rollback of his inflationary policies.
Anti-government protests has gripped the country since August 1.
