The death of President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Ahaejiagamba Ndi Igbo, has been announced.
His son, Jide Iwuanyanwu, has just released a statement to this effect.
According to the statement, the sage died early Thursday, July 25, morning after an undisclosed brief illness in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
Chief Iwuanyanwu hails from Umuohii Atta, in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State.
Before his passing, he was the 11th President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide and the President of the Owerri People’s Assembly.
He would have been 82 by 4th September.
Inspiring Biography
Emmanuel Chukwuemeka was a quintessential Nigerian politician and businessman. He was educated at St. Patrick’s School, Holy Trinity Primary School, New Bethel College, and the Federal School of Science. He studied Civil Engineering at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and was awarded the German Academic Exchange Scholarship. Iwuanyanwu served as a military officer during the three-year Nigerian-Biafran Civil War. After it ended, he resumed his studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and worked as a pupil engineer at the Nigerian Construction and Furniture Company. He later started a construction company, Hardel and Enic Construction Company, which grew into a conglomerate of over 20 companies.
The deceased is regarded as one of Nigeria’s top successful businessmen, a philanthropist per excellence, who forayed into politics vying for Nigeria’s presidency up to three times.
In 2022, he was elected unanimously as the President-General of Ohanaeze, replacing the deceased former PG, George Obiozor.
During his time, Chief Iwuanyanwu championed the Igbo cause for justice and equity as the basis of unity and progress. His eloquent defense of the virtues he believed in had profound impact.
His contributions to Nigeria’s politics and nation building will leave indelible imprints on the sands of time, and the announcement of his passing a profound sense of loss in Nigeria, particularly among the Igbos, and the need to honor his memory.
