Nigerian-born Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is seeking a second term.

She has received the backing of the African Group, which has at least 58 of the organization’s 164 member states. They tabled their support at the July 22 meeting of the WTO General Council.

The African Group requests that the current Director-General make herself available to serve a second term and has proposed that the process of reappointing the Director-General should be started as soon as possible,” they said in their joint statement.

Accepting their nomination, Mrs said, “Everything that I’ve accomplished, we’ve accomplished together,” she said.

Most council members praised Okonjo-Iweala’s hard work and accomplishments during her first term. During her time in the WTO, there has been a cozy relationship and calm in international trade, with little or no disputes among major global trading partners. Poorer countries have also benefited from her initiatives for favorable trade policies.

Nigerian economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (GCON) was first appointed Director-General of the World Trade Organization in March 2021. She was one time Nigeria’s minister of economy and foreign relations, and spent many career years in the World Bank at the top levels.

Okonjo-Iweala has served on boards of various organizations, including Danone, Standard Chartered Bank, MINDS, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Twitter. She is also a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution, a Commissioner Emeritus, and a Co-Chair of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate.
