Former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney, has passed away at the age of 84. His family announced on Tuesday that he died late Monday from complications of pneumonia, alongside longstanding heart and vascular conditions.

“His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,” the statement said.

Cheney served the nation in multiple capacities, including White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States.

Born on January 30, 1941, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Cheney grew up largely in Wyoming. He briefly attended Yale University before transferring to the University of Wyoming, where he earned a degree in political science.

A Political Life Defined by Power and Influence

A Republican stalwart, Cheney entered politics in 1978, winning Wyoming’s House seat and serving for a decade. He later became the 46th Vice President under President George W. Bush, serving two terms from 2001 to 2009.

Renowned as a war hawk, Cheney played a key role in the decision to invade Iraq after intelligence suggested Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, a claim later proven false.

“He is considered one of the most powerful vice presidents in U.S. history, wielding considerable influence behind the scenes,” analysts say.

As Secretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush, Cheney oversaw the Pentagon during the 1990-91 Gulf War.

His neo-conservative vision guided the White House and influenced major policy decisions, shaping the U.S. response after the September 11 attacks by Al-Qaeda.
