The Nigerian Senate has removed Senator Mohamed Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) as its Chief Whip.
Ndume’s removal followed his criticisms against President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Ndume recently gave interviews on Arise TV, Abuja, and BBC Hausa in which he scathingly criticized Tinubu over the country’s food insecurity. The senator said the president was not sufficiently addressing the urgent food crisis and was not open to ideas from experts.
During Wednesday’s plenary, lawmakers of the ruling All Progressives Alliance (APC) sponsored an application to remove Ndume as a principal officer.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the letter of complaint from the APC caucus about his utterances, which they noted were unbecoming of a lawmaker, particularly from the same party as the president.
When put to a voice vote, several lawmakers voted in favor. Mr Ndume was replaced by another senator from his state, Sen. Mohammed Monguno (APC, Borno North).
