The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has banned the Islamic Movement of Nigeria‘s procession to commemorate the 2024 Islamic calendar day of Ashura in Abuja.
The police believe that the organization, also known as Shi’ite, is planning a procession to mark the day that could potentially turn into a protest. The police warn that such processions often result in disturbances and chaos within the national capital territory.
A spokesperson for the FCT police, Josephine Adeh, warned members of the sect on Tuesday not to participate in the planned protest or procession.
The police warn that the command will use all legal means to halt or incapacitate anyone who violates the ban. She insists the police are committed to maintaining law and order and will take measures to prevent any activities that threaten the safety and well-being of the populace.
However, peaceful protests are guaranteed under the Nigerian constitution, and the sect has not clarified whether it will seek a legal remedy to enforce its rights or take laws into its own hands.
