One Die As Protest Escalate In Kenya, President William Ruto Under Pressure To Resign

Kenyan President William Ruto is under pressure to resign amid unrelenting nationwide youth-led protests, which began a month ago.

Ruta withdrew the contentious Finance Bill on June 26 – the initial trigger of discontent, then sacked his entire cabinet and promised reforms, but protesters want more. At least 50 people have been killed so far in the protests, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

Another protester was reportedly killed today in Nairobi.

Demonstrations have taken place in at least 23 of Kenya’s 47 counties, with police sometimes forced to fire at protesters.

Some activists demand Ruto’s resignation and advocate for a systemic overhaul of the entire governance structure in a bid to dismantle institutionalized corruption.
